There is something about shooting with a large format camera. It slows you down. It takes time to set up the bulky tripod, to break open the case and pull out the camera, to position it, choose a lens, position the subject, focus and set the standards, and finally to cock and click the shuttler.
It's a meditative journey. Additionally using paper negatives slows each exposure to several seconds forcing the subject to meditate with me, to calm themselves, and to let the masks that we show the world to melt away. There is no pressure to say 'cheese' or to pose in a particular way.
The subject simply bares themselves for the camera.
